Cosmological Gravitational Wave Background from Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars

چکیده

It has recently been suggested that collapse of neutron stars induced by a phase transition to quark matter can be a considerable source of gravitational waves with kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that if about one percent of all neutron stars undergo this process, the resulting cosmological gravitational wave background would reach about 10 times the critical density. The background would peak at kHz frequencies and could have an observationally significant tail down to Hz frequencies. It would be comparable or higher than other astrophysical backgrounds, for example, from ordinary core collapse supernovae, from r-mode instabilities in rapidly rotating neutron stars, or from magnetars. The scenario is consistent with cosmological backgrounds in neutrinos and photons. PACS numbers: 04.30.Db, 04.80.Nn, 97.60.Jd, 05.70.Fh

Gravitational Waves from a Cosmological Distribution of Sources

The advent of gravitational wave detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and the Advanced-Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory will make it possible to observe many gravitational wave emission phenomena that may or may not have electromagnetic counterparts. In many cases, gravitational waves serve as probes of length and time scales that range many orders of magn...

Gravitational Waves from Phase Transitions of Accreting Neutron Stars

We propose that when neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries accrete sufficient mass and become millisecond pulsars, the interiors of these stars may undergo phase transitions, which excite stellar radial oscillations. We show that the radial oscillations will be mainly damped by gravitational-wave radiation instead of internal viscosity. The gravitational waves can be detected by the advanced...

Gravitational wave background from coalescing compact stars in eccentric orbits

Stochastic gravitational wave background produced by a stationary coalescing population of binary neutron stars in the Galaxy is calculated. This background is found to constitute a confusion limit within the LISA frequency band up to a limiting frequency νlim ∼ 10 −3 Hz, leaving the frequency window ∼ 10–10 Hz open for the potential detection of cosmological stochastic gravitational waves and ...

Orbital Eccentricity Effects on the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background from Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars

Unresolved coalescing binary neutron stars in the Galaxy and beyond produce a stochastic gravitational wave background within the LISA frequency band, which can be potentially dangerous for possible detection of fundamentally more interesting relic cosmological backgrounds. Here we address the question what effects the unavoidable eccentricity of orbits of these systems should have on the prope...

The Detection of Gravitational Waves with LIGO

Gravitational wave emission is expected to arise from a variety of astrophysical phenomena. A new generation of detectors with sensitivity consistent with expectation from such sources is being developed. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), one of these ambitious undertakings, is being developed by a Caltech-MIT collaboration. It consists of two widely separated inte...
